stuck

Help..Help..Help.. Why can't I debug my simple program successfully?

haha, we were given this equation to solve by my professor, & one of us solved it in less than a day. I'm still stucked after many many days. I have resolved to copy instead if i'm still stuck tomorrow! Afterall, isn't imitation the best form of compliment?

Oh, my poor forgotten morals. Where art thou ?

'ok'

One of the most elusive words that I find is 'ok'. The problem is more apparent, especially when u r messaging another person, and u don't really get to see the facial expression or reaction on the other party's face when they are saying o.k..

For instance,

U key in: "Let's meet up next week."

He/She key in: "o.k."

U: "Wanna meet at our usual place? around noon?"

He/She: "o.k."

U: "How's work?"

He/She: "o.k."

Golly, i mean, i know time is short, and messages r s'posed to be short too, but, sometimes, maybe it is useful to add a few more words in.

O.K. might imply to the reader, "o.k., he/she could not care less. Just want u off his back."Or," o.k., that's cool dude. i can't wait to get this going." or, "I don't noe wat u just asked, but, o.k."or "well, i don't really like that plan, and given the choice, i'd do something else, but, since u have decided, well, o.k.."

Sometimes, i would frustratedly try to decipher exactly wat the 2 alphabet reply means. My usual conclusion is, when the other person simply replies 'ok', no ;), or any accompanying words, it most probably means, the person is in no mood to message at the moment, & to end the conversation. pronto.

... and here's some trivial history on the words o.k....(fm dictionary.com)

"OK is a quintessentially American term that has spread from English to many other languages. Its origin was the subject of scholarly debate for many years until Allen Walker Read showed that OK is based on a joke of sorts. OK is first recorded in 1839 but was probably in circulation before that date. During the 1830s there was a humoristic fashion in Boston newspapers to reduce a phrase to initials and supply an explanation in parentheses. Sometimes the abbreviations were misspelled to add to the humor. OK was used in March 1839 as an abbreviation for all correct, the joke being that neither the O nor the K was correct. Originally spelled with periods, this term outlived most similar abbreviations owing to its use in President Martin Van Buren's 1840 campaign for reelection. Because he was born in Kinderhook, New York, Van Buren was nicknamed Old Kinderhook, and the abbreviation proved eminently suitable for political slogans. That same year, an editorial referring to the receipt of a pin with the slogan O.K. had this comment: “frightful letters... significant of the birth-place of Martin Van Buren, old Kinderhook, as also the rallying word of the Democracy of the late election, ‘all correct’.... Those who wear them should bear in mind that it will require their most strenuous exertions... to make all things O.K.” "

wish-list for May

Hehe... finally got a portable hard-disk. Asked CW to help get it for me over the weekend. woo-hoo, 80G of storage space.

*Hmm...ticking off the fingers* Let's see, I've gotten the HD, ordered my Leszek, fan, shelves, done my share of shopping for the week,... Wat else should I add in my wish-list for this month?

Ah yes, a pc. I was drooling over this $2K pc last week, but still abit hesitant to grab it. Hoping tht a newer, faster, cooler version will pop up soon. Afterall, the one thing u can depend on is to end up with a slower pc than the newest on the market.

currently reading: Hot Pursuit by Christina Skye

Just finished reading: Citizen Girl by Nicola Kraus & Emma McLaughlin (oh, this book makes being a fresh grad in NY seems like the worse nightmare ever.) & All The Rage (another Repairman Jack book) by F. Paul Wilson (haha... i just love Jack.)

reprimanded

Sigh! Given the good and mild nature of my supervisor, I have to admit that being reprimanded by him hurts even more. I mean, if he is the loud mouth hurtful type that pretty much scolds everyone on sight, then I could simply consider his remarks rather offhandedly. But, since he is not, I have to admit that the fault lays with me.

It is times like this that I wonder whether research is really the right thing for me. Sigh, it seems so much easier to be an ordinary clerk that punch the numbers in, type letters, make coffee, do filing, and everything else that does not require too much mental abilities.

Sigh.... tht's like 3 sighs in one blog. I hope i will be able to accomplish the new task that he handed me, so tht he won't be too feed up with me next week.

dropping things

Some days are just meant for things to get lost. Maybe we have some sort of intuition when those are the days, when we check twice or thrice on everything.

The best way to avoid these misshaps is to have a really big bag, with a very sound zip. No tiny holes or gaps where things can just slip out.

A few days back, I thought I dropped a set of my keys on the street, and ended up walking up and down the area, looking for 'em. Turned out, there were at my cubicle, safely kept.

3 weeks ago, I kept a bus load of people waiting for me, while i ran to look for my memory stick. haha, they were in my bag all along. I just did not search thoroughly before. *roll eyes*

This morning, I thought, k, this is it. This time, i REALLY dropped something. My case for my specs. *roll eyes again* ya, they were in the lab all along. I have forgotten to bring 'em back the night b4.

The conclusion to the yammering today is, bring less things to avoid missing them. ya, either that or, i am in need of some alzheimer medication.

Madama Butterfly was o.k.. There were no shattering stage effects. Infact, everything was done manually. No rotating parts or the itsiest bit of machinery. Oh, wait, except for the bridge lighting up with fire, which i think, is supposed to mean, burning down the bond that linked Butterfly to her family. I have rarely been right when it comes to all these "symbolic actions".

I totally love Butterfly and Suzuki in their duet though. Pinkerton (the useless guy who went around the world marrying idiotic women) is too fat. haha... But then again, Buttefly didn't look 15, so, tht was o.k., i guess. She has a really really nice voice. That makes up for everything else.

Was tempted to leave after Act 1, but, hey, with the tickets bought, i thot i should stick till the end.

Dunno why I ended up crying throughout the entire Act 3. I mean, it really wasn't tht sad. Everyone noes Butterfly is supposed to end up dead. And, it wasn't tht dramatic. I still can't figure out why the tears just won't stop. must be something they put in the air!

Slightly dissappointed tht this was not the version where Madama Butterfly is actually a male. I think that would have been more entertaining. Or not. I dunno.

All in all, worth going at least once. And thank godness for the translation at the sides. Else, i might have been even more clueless. Although i did worry tht i spent more time looking at tht then at the performers themselves. sheesh... all these fascination with tech.. What will I ever do without electricity?

Shopping @ IKEA

Had great fun on Saturday bullying SF, her bf & K into shopping at Ikea with me. I bought for the flat, a new shelf for the shoe boxes, another for the shoes and a small tv stand for the small but bulky tv in my room.

Going for the Madame Butterfly show tonight. Hope it is as good as everyone says it is. Will sneak out of the office early today so that i can go shop around in the town before the show *muah-haha*. Maybe I can finally go and look for that Leszek Mozdzer cd I mentioned 2 months back.

Just got news that I could get some reimbursement for my conference cum trip, and, i only have to pay for another month of guitar lessons instead of 2. so, yay!... the money star must be blinking for a moment over my head.

My mom must have had a great mother's day, yesterday. She recounted the steamboat feast my sis & niece treated her to with so much joy. I hope she liked the flowers i sent her too. Can't wait to check out whether they are as nice as the website picture. So glad I bought the tix to go home this coming weekend. *happy*

P.S.: Thnx v. much to SF for spiffing up her little nook. It looks real neat now.

Sending out messages...

Mothers' Day is just around the corner. What surprises have you churned out for that special someone in your life?

I always mistaken Mothers' Day as the 2nd Saturday of May instead of Sunday. So, I was about to postpone my gift search until next week. Luckily, my cousin, J, enlightened me in time. Thank you!!! *grin* Ya, u know how muddle headed I am.

Some of my friends would usually say that their family don't have the practice of celebrating this occasion, while others say that everyday should be a Mothers' Day. So, there you go.

I used to have similar notions, until one time, a few years' back, my mom asked me whether I have forgotten to wish her something. Haha... I felt pretty bad then. Of course, she later added that she was just asking for fun, & she doesn't believe in such crappy celebrations.

But somehow, it sort of made me realize, even if the occasion has never been celebrated before in the past, that doesn't mean you or me, may not start putting some effort into making the day slightly more special for our moms.

Afterall, everyone likes to be appreciated, as often as possible. And if your mom just said, no, don't bother with all the hoo-haa, trust me, they are just lying so that you don't feel burdened to do something. Deep inside, they will be just as delighted, if you surprise her with a visit/hug/gift/kiss/card/etc...

This time, the credit for the picture goes to SD. Thnx dude!

Well, anyway, enough with all those sentimental stuff.

Have you ever had someone hang-up on you when u haven't finished with the conversation yet? Be it on an ordinary phone or a mobile? I'm sure you have, I have done that pretty often, to my best buddies, no less. *grin*

Well, there is the very first unconscious reaction to that, in which you pull away from the phone, and just stare at the phone, as though you are telepathically sending out a message/stare to the other party, indicating "hello, I'm still here, pick up that phone again!"

At least, that's what I assume. Maybe when u do that, u are actually just checking whether you mobile has been disconnected, ran out of battery, accidentally shut down, or something like that.

Afterall, WHO would DARE to put down the phone on YOU!

o.k., i've pasted this picture on my blog before, but, they remind me of my pretty mom so much, I just have to put it up again.

End of my guitar lessons

Haha! I can't deny it anymore. I just don't have the passion to keep up the lessons. I haven't practiced for 2 months, & I didn't go for a single class last month (due to trip, work & everything else my fault). I don't know how to break the news out to my instructor, although i think he suspected it earlier than me. I on the other hand had been in a state of denial.

The heart aching thing is the music school's policy. They practically force u to take another couple months of lesson if u plan to stop. *Groan* Too bad i'm too chicken to just drop out like that.

Ah well, at least I've something else to cheer me up. My fan finally quit working for me. Yup! I'm gonna go shopping for a new one. *eyes lit up* Yes! Shopping! *kaChing!* I haven't decided yet whether I want a normal stand sort, or the long cylindrical type that I had been using. The cylindrical type is less, uhm, space invading, and nicer looking, but has a horrible track record. Both such fans in my home have problems, and even the DIY shop near my place had stopped selling 'em. Hmm... ah well, I'll know when I get there.

Maybe I should consider working as a procurement engineer. That's pretty much shopping, stacking 'em up, keeping a record of 'em, and making sure they are used up at the end of the day. The skill that I would need to refine now is the bargaining part. Yup, definitely worth looking into.

P.S.: So glad Viineon liked Shades Of Truth. Her Blog reminded me of all the funny digs that show made of Infernal Affairs. Let's keep our fingers crossed for something just as good soon.

Heading home...

Man, have a splitting headache. Guess I will head home early today.

Ai, so annoying, I actually wrote some stuff down earlier today, but it accidentally got deleted. I just hate writing everything down all over again, so I have changed the topic of my blog for today.

I'm embarking on a new task this week. I am planning to sew (yes! Hand sew!) a nice coffee table cover. The frustrating thing is how hard it is to get a nice big chunky zip around here. So, maybe I will have to work without that first. I am already getting a splitting headache trying to get the right zip from eBay. Who says you can get everything you want from eBay anyway? They obviously have limited purchase selection.

While shopping around yesterday, I spotted an even more suitable type of cloth for a table cover. Hmm... maybe after I finish working on this one, I will sew another one. Haha, unless I have gotten tired of pricked and bleeding fingers by then. Will take a picture of my project if and when I finish my new adventure.

Excitedly signing off and heading home.

currently reading: That's Amore by Carol Grace

Just finished reading: 2cool2betrue by Simon Brooke. a pretty fun book. (after that I started reading this other book, that seemed interesting, but turned out to be NOT my cup of tea. I just hate cheesy futuristic books.)
